We all need a break every now and then. Whether it’s two weeks in a hot country or a long weekend in the UK, when it comes to your loved ones you want to make sure they’re taking time for themselves in later life. Holidays provide the perfect escape for anyone looking to experience new things or relax. However, it can be difficult to decide where to send someone elderly on holiday when there are important factors to take into account, such as medical conditions and mobility. Finding suitable holiday destinations can be difficult at any age.
Which country should you travel to? Which airline should you use? What’s the best hotel and is there plenty to do to keep you occupied? These are questions which can make planning a holiday challenging. Not to worry, though. We’ve taken the first step for you and found some holiday destinations perfect for your elderly loved ones to enjoy without worry.
Spain
Spain is one of Europe’s largest countries and is blessed with mild temperatures and sunshine all year round. The laid back Spanish lifestyle makes it the perfect holiday destination for an elderly person and it certainly helps that around 30% of Spain’s population speaks English.
Spain has everything you could want from a holiday: beaches, sun, culture, great food, and lots to see! The famous ‘Mediterranean diet’ is extremely popular in Spain and it’s extremely beneficial for the elderly. The main culinary attractions include olive oil, fresh fish, and Mediterranean vegetables. If your elderly loved ones are looking to go on holiday and still keep up a healthy diet, Spain is the place to go! And if they find they miss British staples like fish and chips, there are a multitude of expat restaurants all along the coasts.
Spain’s capital Madrid is filled to the brim with culture, alongside Barcelona which is home to the famous Sagrada Familia: Gaudi’s unfinished Roman Catholic church which has been under construction since 1882. Other options suitable for the elderly are Spain’s close friends the Balearic islands, which are a favourite for older travellers. There is the busy party island of Ibiza or the quiet relaxing spots like Menorca and Majorca.
Dorset
Holidays don’t always have to be abroad, there is plenty to see and do right here in the UK. Dorset is a county in southwest England and is a fantastic holiday destination for the elderly, or as an extended family trip for all ages. Dorset boasts some beautiful beaches, castles, unique attractions, and gorgeous sights we think your elderly loved ones will enjoy. Here are our top things to do and see when in Dorset:
- Lulworth Cove – Dorset has more than 100 miles of coastline and some of the most gorgeous beaches in the UK. Lulworth Cove is a white pebble beach with vibrant blue waters. At low tide there are rock pools teeming with sea creatures to explore.
- Jurassic Skyline – If your elderly loved one is not a fan of heights, this may be an attraction to avoid. But for those who don’t mind being high up for the sake of a beautiful view, the Jurassic Skyline is one not to miss. Located in Weymouth, the viewing capsule has floor to ceiling windows and rotates a full 360 degrees showcasing uninterrupted panoramic views up to 26km away.
- Langmoor and Lister Gardens – These award winning seafront gardens offer a view across Lyme Bay in Lyme Regis. It’s an ideal location for a more relaxing afternoon, but also offers table tennis and crazy golf for those holidaying with younger members of the family.
South Africa
South Africa is at the southernmost tip of Africa, and it’s a holiday destination for the more adventurous – and those who can stand spending 11 hours on a plane. The country is a wildlife lover’s dream, with its national park home to the ‘big five’: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo.
South Africa is filled with great attractions for all ages, from safaris across the savannah (perfect for those who struggle with walking long distances) to whale-watching tours. Saga offers holidays to South Africa which are specifically for those who want to relax on holiday, allowing the elderly to enjoy themselves without having to rush around.
The time zone in South Africa is two hours ahead of the UK, so it’s unlikely your loved one will suffer with jet lag. The weather is warm but can vary from place to place; in the height of summer temperatures can enter the thirties, but as long as your elderly loved one is prepared there will be nothing to worry about.
New York City
New York City is arguably one of the most popular bucket-list destinations to visit in the world. There’s so much to see and do so there will never be a dull moment. For the elderly, New York can seem intimidating, but with the right planning it’s set to be the trip of a lifetime.
New York is like no other place in the world. As soon as you enter the city you’ll be in awe of the tall skyscrapers and busy hustle and bustle of the locals. If your elderly loved one is looking for a holiday destination full of fast-paced excitement, New York is the place for them!
With many attractions in the Big Apple it can be difficult to decide where to go and what to see. The subway system and famous yellow taxis make the city easy to navigate, and most places can be walked to if your loved one is more on the active side. Here are some top places that should be visited when in New York:
- Empire State Building.
- Top of the Rock.
- Times Square.
- Broadway.
- Central Park.
- 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
- Rockefeller Centre.
- Statue of Liberty.
Jordan
Jordan is located on the east bank of the Jordan River and consists of ancient monuments, nature reserves, and seaside resorts. It may be a more unusual holiday destination for the elderly, but just because your loved one is older doesn’t mean they can’t also enjoy the more offbeat travel destinations.
Jordan is a historical haven and great fit for anyone looking for a relaxing and educational trip. It’s the home to Petra (also known as the Rose City), one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. The abandoned city of Petra is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, and a must-see if you’re visiting the area.
Jordan borders with the Dead Sea, a beautiful place for a relaxing day at the beach. The Dead Sea is known for its health benefits and due to it’s high salt content you can sit back and float in the sea for as long as you want. This is especially good for the elderly or those who aren’t strong swimmers.
Safety & Planning
Holidays don’t have to involve stress if the right planning is done beforehand. Make sure you’ve looked into your destination in detail, and organised the appropriate travel and insurance. Check that passports are up to date, the luggage limits are abided by, and you arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare.
Consider the climate of the destination and pack accordingly, including sun cream and any medication that your loved one may need whilst they’re away from home.
In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is also important to research any restrictions that may be in place. Certain destinations may still have lockdowns in effect, or have a high number of cases. Always refer to the latest guidance.
