Every summer across the UK there's a huge array of events and activities held, from sports, arts and crafts to music. Of course not everything is free, but we're here today to give you a definitive list of the best free and paid events and activities that are available in parts of the UK.
These events are great for all ages, but particularly might be of interest for the elderly to enjoy.
1. Open Air Cinemas
Great for those who love movies and the great outdoors! Outdoor cinemas first popped up around 1916 in Berlin, Germany, often screening Hollywood Premieres to audiences who sat on camping chairs and blankets. They soon caught on across the globe, with Large and well-known outdoors cinemas known today in the likes of California and Australia where festivals are held around outdoors screenings.

2. London Festival
As mentioned above, the Summer by the River festival is free to attend. It is running throughout the summer, and offers more than just films. There's music, dance, and drama aplenty, with plenty of opportunities for food and drinks under the sun.
The Underbelly Festival is presenting its acts at Earl's Court and Cavendish Square this year. Although some events require tickets, the festival ground is free to enter with lots of bars and street food available to enjoy in the glorious sunshine.
3. Bristol Balloons Spectacular
This FREE spectacular event is one of Britain's biggest and best. The International Balloon Fiesta, held in Bristol, attracts more than half a million visitors over the four days that it runs. The skies are filled with all different types and colours of Hot Air Balloons. It's a fantastic event and undeniably one worth attending. What's more, there is also live music, a funfair, and plenty of food and drink to try. This year it takes place from the 11th - 14th of August.
4. Airshows
Summer provides excellent weather for airshows, and there are plenty happening this year. There will be several shows at the Duxford Imperial War Museum, in Cambridgeshire, but the one you don't want to miss in the Summer Air Show, as it will feature the legendary Red Arrows. Tickets will be necessary, and it runs only on June 18th and 19th. If you miss it, though, Duxford host several flying days throughout the year.
For a free show, head down to a seafront airshow. The Weston Air Festival (June 25th and 26th) takes place in Weston-super-Mare and is completely free to view. As is the Wales Airshow in Swansea (July 2nd and 3rd).
6. National Trust
Many National Trust sites hold activities through-out the summer period for all ages. It's a great day out, a chance to see and learn lots and enjoy some fantastic preserved grounds and halls. To find out more of the events and what you can do you can visit the National Trust website.
5. Relax By The Water
Why not sit by a lake, enjoy some lunch or a cold beverage, better yet rent a rowing boat or pedalo. There's a number of places do this across the country. The most popular places include Hyde Park, Regent's Park, Battersea Park, Finsbury Park, and Victoria Park.
7. Liverpool International Music Festival
Titled Europe's biggest free city music festival, it's Liverpool's greatest event. Taking place from the 29th to 31st of July this year, it will see bands from across the globe come together. This year, they are offering a diverse line-up at specially selected venues across the city.
