On May 6th, the nation and the Commonwealth will come together to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. Some of us may be old enough to remember the coronation of the late Queen in 1953, but for most of us it’s a never-seen-before spectacle. This momentous occasion is also an opportunity for families and communities to come together. With that in mind, we are looking at a selection of activities you can take part in with your loved ones over the coronation weekend.
Watch the Ceremony with Your Community
The Coronation is set to be broadcast live on ITV, Sky, and the BBC, and people across the world are sure to tune in to witness it. However, you don’t have to watch it at home. Public screenings are being arranged throughout the UK, bringing people together to celebrate the crowning of the King.
You can find screenings by visiting the government website.
If you ca’t get to a screening near you, why not consider inviting friends or family around and watch together. Everyone could bring some snacks or drinks to make it a proper event. This is also an effective way to combat loneliness.
Attend a Big Lunch
Throughout the Coronation Weekend, streets and communities across the UK will come together to attend Big Lunches. This is an initiative that has been launched by the Eden Project to bring people together and celebrate the occasion.
Just like viewing the ceremony with neighbours, attending a Coronation Big Lunch is the ideal opportunity to get to know your neighbours. For elderly loved one who may be experiencing isolation, it’s perfect for reconnecting with your local community. You may even meet new people who can introduce you to entertaining hobbies.
Do Some Baking
Whilst you never really need an excuse to bake some tasty treats, the Coronation is an opportunity to treat yourself. What’s more, you can share your baked goods with friends, family, or neighbours.
Baking is also an activity that appeals to all generations. Make it a family project, even if you bake something as simple as some cupcakes. Decorate them with Union Flag icing and tuck in. Or, if you’re feeling more ambitious, try making some of Good Housekeeping’s baking picks.
Decorate the House
If you’re feeling particularly patriotic, you might want to do up the house to reflect your celebratory mood. Even something as simple as Union Flag bunting could be a way to celebrate. If you really want to show your enthusiasm, why not decorate the outside of your house, too?
If you or your loved one can’t get around as well as you used to, get the family involved to help. Hang a flag or two from your windows and add some colour to your house. Plus, you can also help out at your local Big Lunch by offering a hand with the decorations.
Head Out for a Walk
With no big events planned for the bank holiday Monday, it could be the perfect opportunity to gather your family and head out on a gentle ramble. Walking in nature has many benefits for both physical and mental health, such as improving circulation and relieving stress.
Walking together also means you will be in safe hands, even if you are living with mobility difficulties. Choose an easy route and have a catch-up as you walk. This is an activity you can get involved in even if the Coronation doesn’t interest you. Plus, it could help you sleep well ready for things to get back to normal.
Staying Safe During the Coronation Weekend
On this special weekend, just as much as any other day, it’s important to look out for your wellbeing. If you or your loved one are living with a health condition that increases their risk of falls, or if you just want some extra peace of mind, consider a Careline alarm.
With a Careline alarm, help can be arranged at the press of a button. In an emergency, simply activate your alarm pendant and our UK-based, TSA-accredited Care Team will answer your alert. They assess the situation over the base unit loudspeaker before informing your emergency contacts that your alarm has been activated and help is required.
We also offer a fall detector plan, which raises an automatic alert after a hard fall, and the futureproof SmartLife Alarm. This alarm provides all the benefits of a traditional alarm, plus our fastest connection speeds and extended alert range, all without requiring a landline phone connection.
To find out more, or to order your Careline Alarm today, call us on 0800 030 8777 to speak with our helpful team.
