This week marks the start of Museums at Night, a not-for-profit, nationwide event that invites UK museums, galleries and heritage sites to open up after hours. This festival takes place twice a year, once in Spring and once in Autumn and this season the event takes place from this Thursday 27th through to Saturday 29th October. Museums at Night allows cultural locations across the country to open up to new visitors and offer exciting and innovative events.
Below we’ve included our favourite events from across the country that might interest you and your family. Many events even have a Halloween theme that is great for evenings with your children/ grandchildren.

1. Locos in a Different Light at The National Railway Museum, York
26/10/2016-29/10/2016 | 18.00 – 22.00
This free event is definitely one to take advantage of this week. The National Railway Museum is opening its doors at night and hosting an exhibition with a difference. As part of ‘Illuminating York’, the museum’s Great Hall will be plunged into darkness and a beautiful light and colour show will illuminate the many engines inside the museum. Don’t miss the installation ‘Travelling light’ by Heinrich and Palmer. A great night out for everyone, especially any train-lovers in your party!

2. Exclusive Evening Engineering Tours of Tower Bridge at Tower Bridge, London

Have you ever wanted to get behind the scenes at Tower Bridge? For one night only you can take the fantastic engineering tour at night! This is a one-off opportunity to see the areas that are usually out of bounds to the public such as the Bridge Control Room, the Bascule Chambers below river level and the machinery room. Booking is advised for this popular event.

3. Lighting Up the Great Bath at The Roman Baths, Bath

Magnificent by day, the Roman baths are even more beautiful at night when lit by torchlight. There is also the opportunity to make mini lights – a great craft activity for children.

4. Tudor Pyjama and Welly Party at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, London

Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, built on the orders of Henry VIII in 1543, is a unique Tudor building surrounded by medieval royal hunting forest. The perfect location to host a pyjama and welly party! There will be three spooky Tudor family activities as well as a mid-evening Tudor snack and a walk in the woods. This is the perfect event to take your kids/grandchildren to if you live in the South East.

8. Ghostly Gaslight at Blists Hill Victoria Town, Telford

Dress in you scariest costume to experience Blists Hill this Halloween weekend! There will be ghostly apparitions on every corner and more modern spooks such as ghostbusters and zombies roaming the dimly lit streets. 9. Escape The Infirmary at The Infirmary Museum, Worcester

10. Ghostly Gressenhall at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, Museum of Norfolk Life, Dereham
The perfect Halloween party to take your little ghouls to! Ghostly Gressenhall are offering prizes to the ‘wearer of the most terrifying outfit’ so make sure the whole family looks suitability spooky. There is also an opportunity for the kids to become ghost hunters and track down all of the friendly ghosts living at Gressenhall. The cafe will also be open all evening for snacks and drinks.
