May marks National Share-a-Story Month – an annual calendar event which aims for the following:
– To celebrate the power of illustrations, particularly in picture books, for all ages and to encourage sharing of picture books.
– To celebrate, appreciate and enjoy pictures in Museums and art galleries and to encourage creative writing using these pictures as starting points.
– To encourage youngsters of all ages to draw, illustrate, sketch and tell a story, however simple, through their own pictures and the comic format.
We think this is a great calendar event, and something everyone should get involved in – who doesn’t love telling stories and reminiscing about favourite childhood picture books!
The Storytellers & Books We Love
There’s a massive array of writers and illustrations we’ve all come to know and love over the years, from Roald Dahl to Jacqueline Wilson and of course JK Rowling. National Share-a-Story Month isn’t just all about these famous faces and books, it’s also about individuals who love creating and telling their own stories.
It’s a month where we should encourage people, particularly children, to be creative and imaginative with storytelling, drawing and illustrating. Why not start up a blog if you love writing and storytelling so much? Or submit your stories to magazines and newspapers?
Because we love this calendar event so much we’ve taken a moment to list some of our favourite storytellers and books just below. Let us know if these bring back any memories or if you love them just as much as we do:
- Biff & Chip
- R.L. Stine
- The Pop Up Mice of Mr Brice Dr Seuss
- The Hungry Caterpillar
- Nelly The Elephant
- Brothers Grimm
- Matilda – Roahl Dahl
- The Rainbow Fish
- Elmer
- The Demon Headmaster
- Flat Stanley
- The Angriest Boy In The World
